A hypocrite, then, is one who puts on a mask, a false face.

Jesus did not say, “Do not do good works.” Nor did he instruct, “Do not let your works be seen.” We must do good works, and some works, such as benevolence or teaching, must be seen in order to have an impact. So let’s be clear. To do a good thing is a good thing. To do good to be seen is not. In fact, to do good to be seen is a serious offense. Here’s why.

Hypocrisy turns people away from God. When God-hungry souls walk into a congregation of wannabe superstars, what happens? When God seekers see singers strut like Las Vegas entertainers . . . When they hear the preacher—a man of slick words, dress, and hair—play to the crowd and exclude God . . . When other attendees dress to be seen and make much to-do over their gifts and offerings . . . When people enter a church to see God yet can’t see God because of the church, don’t think for a second that God doesn’t react. “Be especially careful when you are trying to be good so that you don’t make a performance out of it. It might be good theater, but the God who made you won’t be applauding” (Matt. 6:1 MSG).

Hypocrisy turns people against God. So God has a no-tolerance policy. Let the cold, lifeless bodies of the embezzling couple issue their intended warning. Let’s take hypocrisy as seriously as God does. How can we?

1. Expect no credit for good deeds.
None. If no one notices, you aren’t disappointed. If someone does, you give the credit to God. Ask yourself this question: If no one knew of the good I do, would I still do it? If not, you’re doing it to be seen by people.

2. Give financial gifts in secret.
Money stirs the phony within us. We like to be seen earning it. And we like to be seen giving it. So “when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing” (Matt. 6:3 NLT).

3. Don’t fake spirituality.

When you go to church, don’t select a seat just to be seen or sing just to be heard. If you raise your hands in worship, raise holy ones, not showy ones. When you talk, don’t doctor your vocabulary with trendy religious terms. Nothing nauseates more than a fake “Praise the Lord” or a shallow “Hallelujah” or an insincere “Glory be to God.”

Bottom line: don’t make a theater production out of your faith. “Watch me! Watch me!” is a call used on the playground, not in God’s kingdom. Silence the trumpets. Cancel the parade. Enough with the name-dropping. If accolades come, politely deflect them before you believe them. Slay the desire to be noticed. Stir the desire to serve God.

Heed the counsel of Christ: “First wash the inside of the cup and the dish, and then the outside will become clean, too” (Matt. 23:26 NLT). Focus on the inside, and the outside will take care of itself. Lay your motives before God daily, hourly. “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life” (Ps. 139:23–24 NLT).

Do good things. Just don’t do them to be noticed. You can be too good for your own good, you know.

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:3–4 NIV)

Lord, you make it plain in your Word that you hate hypocrisy, especially because it turns others away from you. So, Father, I pray that you would blunt my natural inclination to seek personal recognition for whatever good things you allow me to do. I don’t want to be a phony, but neither do I want to be a glory hound. Fill me with your Spirit, and teach me to follow his example in gladly giving all glory to your Son. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

EPIGNOSIS - Your Key to Faith

Acknowledge what you have and who you are in Christ Jesus.

Let's see Philemon 1 v 6 "that the communication of thy faith may become effectual by the acknowledging of every good thing which is in you in Christ Jesus"

Two Greek Words to consider here - Koinonia for communication and Epignosis for acknowledge

I already shared the meaning of Koinonia and it is instructive to note that the same word is used here to describe how believers should acknowledge what they have in Christ. That is, when you 'share' your faith, you show forth the good things Christ has deposited in you.

I'll make that even clearer; the more you express your faith in Christ, living forth the essence of your new nature, you show forth every good thing you have in Christ Jesus. How do you prove your faith and Christianity? By showing it. When you show it, you prove it. It's that simple!

Like a candle or light that is lit and put on a hill and not under a bushel, God through Paul is reminding us that we have EVERY good thing in Christ. Permit me to dwell a little on that. Believers are fond of looking down on themselves, thinking they're not worth much, in false humility. Religion has wrongly taught us that humility means denying that you're all that and more.

I've got news for you Christian - EVERY GOOD THING is in you. You're Christ's handiwork (Eph 2:10) and thus you have the best of the best right there inside of you. You're awesome. God took his time to recreate you and give you every good thing along with Christ Jesus (Rom 8:32).

Still unsure? Look at Col 2:10 "And you are complete in him...".

Yes, you have every good thing in Christ. Communicate it, acknowledge it, live it. This is the true humility - Accepting who you are as a new creation.

Doing Love

Love is a verb.

This should get you thinking. For the 'love apologists' who have been taught that 'love is a feeling', some magical swooning goose-pimpled, heart warming emotion that encapsulates you towards someone, I bring you news. You have been deceived. That is not love. The emotion is rather an offshoot of love. But love itself, NO!

Love never fails.

You see, surely if love is a feeling then it'll last right? For every emotional attachment you've had and lost, surely that betrays the immovable truth that love is a feeling. If it never fails, then it's not an emotion.

Love is a decision.

You choose to love someone or something. Your 'love' towards and for the object is a decision you make. Inspite of glaring wrongs, hurts, disappointments and the loss of feeling for that person, your choice and decision to love this person is what makes love remain. It holds unto the fact that it is all about the 'doing'. This is why Love never fails.

Love is the greatest of all.

This is predicated on the fact that love never fails. That love is a decision. That love conquers every ill feeling, every emotional attachment lost. Love believes the best of its object. When love is in force, nothing else matters. This word conveys several meanings to different people. Accordingly from the holy writ, one of its most significant usage is found in 1 Corin 1:9

"God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord".

The original Greek word used here is 'KOINONIA' which literally means - participation, benefaction: to communicate, communion, distribution, fellowship.

God has called each and every one who is in him unto a participation, sharing and fellowship with him. It becomes clearer when we examine what the essence of this communication is. It means, a sharing of his nature, a participation in his reign, a benefaction of his righteousness.

When you understand that all of God is in you and you in him (John 15:20-22) and that you have been filled with all of the godhead (Col 2:10), then the message Paul intends to share becomes clear. You and I have a fellowship with God!

Isn't that exciting and liberating? He shares all things in common with us.

Rejoice believers. God is in partnership with you. You are not alone. You are not bereft of help. You are not lacking in assistance. You are not lacking in wisdom and confidence. You are not devoid of leadership. The Alpha and Omega resides within you, in fellowship with you.

He says he is faithful which means - "God will do this, for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord." (NLT)

He keeps his word. It is the same word from which we get the medical term 'catheter'. A catheter is a medical instrument (tube) that is inserted into the body of a diseased person for the purpose of continuous drainage, purification and removal of impurities from the body. This tube continually 'cleanses' the body making it free of all bad substances.

In the same way, John is affirming to us that the Blood of Jesus is a 'catheter', constantly purifying the believer of all sin, impurities and wrong doing. It (Jesus' blood) is the singular substance required for the continual cleansing of the believer.

Please note that this is an action that does not depend on you or what you do. That is, the cleansing is not triggered by any external action on your part. Just as the medical catheter works constantly (irrespective of the patient's condition, as long as it is inserted into him) to remove bodily impurities, the blood of Jesus works in the same way to always ensure that in the sight of God, you are always presented spotless, blameless, sinless and guiltless.

God's own catheter is at work to ensure that no matter the circumstance, there is NO CONDEMNATION to you who is in Christ Jesus. Therefore rejoice believer, you are purified by Jesus' blood. No need to go about feeling helpless or ashamed or worse, powerless. No use seeking an external vindication of your acceptance before God, or your worth to him.

The 'catheter' has made you clean. His blood cleanses you from all sin!

Sharing the Word...

Having thought long and hard about what to write, I have decided that henceforth my blog will contain nuggets of God's word, taking a scripture or two and dissecting its meanings from the original languages. Sometimes it may just be looking up a word in the original Greek or Hebrew and explaining it in the light of other scriptures to help you understand the true meaning.

I believe this will help believers and students of the Word alike to understand the intention behind the communicators of the Holy Writ as they were inspired of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps that's where I should start - how that God's word, though written by mortal men is actually inspired (or written) by God himself. Lets look at 2 Peter 1:20-21

"knowing this first, that no prophesy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophesy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were MOVED by the holy ghost"

The first word to look at here is - Moved which in Greek is the word 'phero'. This literally means "to bear or carry" and figuratively - 'be driven, bring forth, be driven, be inspired, uphold'.

Basically Peter is saying effectively - think not that when we (writers of the scriptures) pen words that the words are of our own interpretation or personal opinion. Indeed they have been 'driven, inspired, borne to carry' as of God's will - the Words of Truth.

Next time someone dares compare the authorship of the Word as simple mere men writing stuff, remember 2nd Peter 1:20,21. The authorship of the Bible isn't like any other religious code of conduct or ritualistic fetishes borne of the culture or tradition of the time. This is why God's word is the ONLY truth that transcends every culture, tribe or generation.

Any wonder HE is - the same yesterday, today and forever (Heb 13:8).

Tweets

In the past few months I have found myself (almost) addicted to Twitter. Yes I think I may have been bitten by the bug since I joined the ranks on a sunny afternoon in July. I'm not exactly complaining though. It has provided me with room to air views, share inner thoughts and sometimes, just have fun.

Yes I said fun...Life is a bee-hive of differing aspects to everyday living. Jesus embodied all there is to life's many blessings. The idea that you can live healthy, joyful lives being useful to the ever changing society, environment and social strata.

So...I tweet.

I think I have met a lot of people that way as well...unsure if I can call them all 'Friends' 'cos as I have learned, it pays to have few friends and even fewer close friends. I didn't think it made sense a few years ago when a friend, pastor and close confidant (#youknowwhoyouare - that's tweet lingua by the way) suggested such to me.

I think I can use Twitter for a good purpose. I think that gradually I can build a network where in lives are constantly blessed, challenged and encouraged unto a higher living. I think that indeed social networks pay a very crucial role in how we impact lives as Christians. And so I will continue, in hope that someday someone will testify of the long lasting impact a few 'tweets' have made in their lives.

iBelieve, iSpeak - tweet lingua if you didn't know already.

Tweet y'all soon.

3 Years....

.....And a whole lot has happened. I have changed, my perspective to life, my experiences, my job, my family. I have increased in many ways, and life has taught me its fair share of many lessons.

What hasn't however changed is my thirst for truth, knowledge and opportunities. I live in a land far away from home....building and growing my own family. I have made few friends, and trusted even fewer. Disappointments have come, and indeed they have all gone. I made money, and lost money. Lost loved ones, and birthed one I madly love.

It's been 3 years, a roller coaster ride of emotions, regrets, joys and achievements.

I didn't know what to write, didn't stop to think.

I think I'm back....I'm just unsure if I should continue in the same breathe, or indeed start a new blog. I have a few days to consider this. In the meantime, continue to grow in grace...

The Best Way to Live

The word selflessness brings to mind the idea putting oneself less. While this is not incorrect, it is incomplete unless we focus on the object of such gesture: Others! How do we demonstrate selfless living in our everyday lives?

The life of one comes readily to mind, of a man so full of love and compassion for people despite being despised, hated and afflicted by them. One who knowing their eternal destiny was destruction and death ignored himself and took a decision, a decision that would change the course of human destiny, one that would become the basis of life.

He made the most selfless decision known to man; he paved the path to redemption for all humanity by giving up his own life. This man submitted himself to the most gruesome death ever known to mankind. He died in a most humiliating and shameful, yet painful manner. And while he died, he asked that his murderers be forgiven. The thought of this brings tears to my eyes as I wondered how anyone could be so selfless, so full of love and compassion for people who didn’t even care about him.

Before I became a Christian I was completely fascinated by this story, the story of the one who would willingly die for me, even though I’d never met him. I remember thinking it must be insane or unordinary for any man to love like this and go through what he did. This love so captivated me that even if the threat of eternity in hell wasn’t enough to scare me into accepting Jesus, this act sure made me embrace him.

In this one show of love, this man called Jesus had set an example. And he did this as a human being just like you and I.

“For as much then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood, he himself likewise took part of the same….. Therefore, in all things he had to be made like his brethren….” Heb 4:14, 17.

Jesus exhibited this selfless nature as a human being, filled with divine ability; the same divine ability that has been given to us as Christians. Remember his words to us about having the capacity to do the works he’s done and even greater works? Thus we establish that we have in us, God’s ability to be completely selfless.

Another fact we need to understand is the desire behind Jesus’ act of selflessness, I mean why did he do it? What did he stand to gain? Amazingly everything he did was so we would benefit from the free gift of salvation.

He demonstrated to us that the right attitude to a selfless life is not to expect anything in return, never wondering what you have to gain. Jesus showed us what it means to express true acts of love, compassion and selflessness in our daily walk whether on the bus, train, homes, church or other public place.

And such opportunities abound. It could be as simple as standing up for that old man or pregnant lady on the crowded tube, offering to do chores or help with excess work, offering to help complete strangers even if it takes you out of your way or giving generously to the poor.Let not these selfless acts be based on colour, tribe or gender. Rather let it hinge on the principles of our Lord; that which is loving and unconditional.

This is the best way to live!

Created for a Reason

<span style="color: rgb(102, 0, 51); This catchphrase was made popular by the TV soap Days of our Lives aired on US network, NBC. It depicts the lives of men and women as they walk through this life loving, giving, hurting, hating and eventually, dying.
It is a reflection of man: His passage from birth, infancy, adolescence, and adulthood. The people he meets, the women and men he loves and the events that shape his life. It is a creative narrative of everyday struggles and how man responds to them. Perhaps some or all of these determine his values, beliefs, ideals and goals.

Oft he is drawn to certain faith that relies on an unseen being and his behaviour and integrity may inadvertently be shaped by this faith.Indeed man’s days are like sands through the hour glass: unsure, uncertain, wanton, depraved, decadent and degenerate. Man must find a route out of the mess. Is this life just about birthing, hurting, hating, corruption, selfishness, loving and dying?

Surely there must be more to our life than what we currently experience. Did we evolve for a purpose bigger than we currently accomplish? Simple minds may wonder what the religious bigotry is all about; many are quick to dissuade it as another of life’s preoccupation.

But is it really? Could there be more in the offing? Should we ever be content with merely existing? Perhaps we can shape our lives in the appropriate desired directions, and play active roles in what becomes of us.

Do you think so? I agree with you. I agree life isn’t about “Que sera sera”. Man isn’t as the grass of the land or the sands of the sea, which rise without the will to establish how the end will turn out.

I agree his faith should be more than mere religion, perhaps rather a relationship. Man can participate in his creator’s plan for him and enjoy the fullness of the magnum opus for which he evolved.

Let’s unite in this; that man indeed is a masterpiece. He is the creator’s most accomplished work, fitting for the best of his habitual pleasures. Not merely another one of the many creations of the creator, he is one carefully thought of, crafted in the splendour of the heavens, breathe with the life of God!

ZOE - Filled

As I lay in bed this morning in semi-conscious state, y'know that point where you're still kinda asleep but also awake, I was thinking how blessed I am to be filled with the life of God. Last night while speaking to my precious jewel (by the way, the pix on this page is hers....not mine; and before you wonder, yes...am male....and put up her picture described as beautiful 'cos that's what I think of her.....beautiful beyond description; not just outwardly but inwardly as well. Ah, aren't I a blessed man?), the life of God in us was the basis of the dialogue.

Intriguing as it really is, 'ZOE' is the summation of all that the father of lights has infused in every believer. I remember the first time I learnt of this awesome reality. Way back in my first year as an undergraduate and learning the ropes of christianity, I became interested in the Greek language and started studying the Greek New Testament along with my many translations of the Bible. I had learnt that the original languages in which the Bible was written were Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic for the Old Testament, New Testament and Words of Jesus respectively. I also learnt that the New Testament portion of the bible unveils all that concern me directly as a believer and that it throughly describes all that Jesus came to do as he walked the streets of the earth on his way to Golgotha, then his victorious resurrection.

To understand my identity and the inheritance which God has given to me as joint heirs with Christ therefore, I began to look deeper at the original languages. I began to consider the richness of the meaning of certain words which our poor English language could not totally describe in order that we may fully appreciate the intention of the writer in passing across his message. ZOE is one of such words. In Greek literal sense, it describes the "life of God, life in the absolute sense as God has it and the intrinsic essence that makes God, God".

Further study unveiled to me that indeed this life of God, just as God has it is what we believers have received. When Jesus said he had come to give us life, and life abundantly (John 10:10), this is what he meant. When he told Nicodemus that all who believe in him will have eternal life (John 3:16), this is exactly what he meant. When John wrote about us having life (John 1:4), or testified about eternal life which we have received from God (1 John 5:11), ZOE is what he meant.

Isn't it awesome to know that God has filled us as believers with his essence? The life that makes God who he is, is exactly what we have. If this is the case, then it means we have ALL it takes in this life and beyond to live victoriously. Darkness or death is beneath us, the earth stands still at our command - friends, we have ETERNAL LIFE! It's the seed of your victory, the assurance that you will not die, the confidence that if you ask anything from God, you will have it. Eternal life sets us on a pedestal of continual triumph, we march on as armies of conquerors.....oh my goodness; thank God for Eternal life.

A realisation of this awesome truth motivated my sign-on id "zoe-filled"; I am blessed because I am filled with the life of God, I have his life and this, more abundantly. As Peter wrote in his second epistle "According as his divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness...." (2 Peter 1:3), Peter must have had Zoe in his mind. God has given to us ALL things that suffices us to reign in this life. Eternal life is the fulcrum.

Fight the good fight

One of the blessed words of Paul to young Timothy during a time when he faced the challenging task of erasing false doctrine and questions about his maturity to pastor the churches at Ephesus are what I want you to ponder upon this month. Written to encourage him in his conduct and to be on his guard lest his youthfulness become a liability, rather than an asset, to the gospel, the apostle charged him to “Fight the good fight of faith…” 1 Tim 6: 12.
Just like Timothy, there seems to be an extra responsibility on our shoulders as young Christians to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and the gentleness that befits a man of God. Listening to his messages as well as reading his many literature obviously shaped my thoughts and perspectives about the faith. I have learnt through his ministry and countless other study of God's word that indeed the believer has been given the authority in Christ Jesus.

Authority over sicknesses and pains, authority over the devil, dominion over the earth, authority to use the name of Jesus, authority over death, authority over any and everything that's of this world. We have been transfered to a pedestal in this life where we reign in the heavenly places.

By virtue of Christ's death on calvary, he purchased for us this authority and infused the power of God in our spirits that we have the ability to do greater works on this earth. We thus ought to exercise our authority in christ and lead triumphant lives continually for "Greater is he that is in us, than he that is in the world".

Our Light Affliction

This morning I want to encourage you. Perhaps you're going through a tough time, perhaps things aren't as great as you would desire. Be patient, relax and let your rejoicing be in the Lord. Today may not be shaping up the way you would ideally want, and the storms of life may be taking their toll on you. I am in this phase as well, but as I prayed this morning, the lord lifted up my heart.

I began to see that God is purging me and preparing me for a greater glory. I began to see that indeed, he is faithful to ensure that I will not be tried beyond what I can handle. He hasn't promised me a life of "no trials or challenges", indeed he warned me they'll come, my faith will be tested....but that I should be cheerful, because I through God has overcome. I am a victor and I live in God as a triumphant child of his glory.

I knew within the inner man that I cannot afford to be led of my senses, considering what I can see rather than what I cannot see. For I live my life by the faith of God and not by my sight (senses). So I rejoice, I am boisterous because I know that at the end of this darkness is a great dawn. Just like Jesus went through a time of darkness - his betrayal, the cruel trials, the mockery, the denials, the beatings, the crucifixtion; he awoke victorious, to a new and blessed dawn.

From the mind's eye, everything seems like the weight of the world may be all on you, and that God has forsaken you. Be of good cheer child of God, these are just light afflictions. God has promised that they are temporary and are working for you a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Release your faith in God, rejoice that he's found you faithful to take you through your fire of refinement so that you can come out purified, precious and great.

Our God is worthy to be praised!

Singing or Sinning?

I have heard different kinds of preached messages with some of them having some interesting topics. Consider these: "Excuse me Lord, I have a question!", " Content in the Context of the Concept", and the one that drew my mind's eye, "Are you singing or sinning?". Before you allow your mind to wonder at the basis of such a message, hold your breath and check out this simple piece of scripture.

"By HIM (Jesus) therefore let us offer the sacrifice of Praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name". Heb 13:15

Accordingly we are supposed to open our mouth, sing with grace in our hearts and praise God continually. Isn't it the Psalmist who beseeched everything that has breath to praise the Lord? Aren't we as Christians supposed to live a life of continous worship and thanksgiving to our God? Indeed we are! However we ought to realise one important thing; let your praising be BY HIM. What does this mean?

Simply put, let every song you sing be one that acknowledges Jesus' finished work on your behalf, sing with an understanding of what God through his son did for you in calvary. Before you utter those words in singing, read the lyrics again. Do they agree with what the Bible says concerning you? Do they indeed show forth the magnificence of God? If you don't know, then rather than plunge into a singing spree, check your Bible or ask your Pastor or some learned brother or sister.

Just like James warned us against praying amiss, Paul in his writings indirectly requests us not to sing amiss. In scriptures like Eph 5:19-20, Col 3:16 we are told that when we sing, let it be with an understanding of the Grace of God, giving thanks to his name for Jesus Christ. There are a number of songs called Gospel, which in reality are not Gospel. I mean, if we read the lyrics and consider the messages, indeed they are not "good news". Rather than depict the sovereignty and excellence of God and his manifest blessings to us through Christ, these songs do otherwise.

Gospel songs are supposed to be exactly what we call them; Gospel (good news)! Next time you listen to a song, or attempt to sing your favourite melody, stop to read the lyrics very well. Ponder the message and like a christian with a Berea attitude, check to ensure its concomitant with scripture truth. If you don't, you just may be sinning and not singing.

A Great 2007 Ahead

I guess it's a little belated, but better late than never! So here's wishing all bloggers a fruitful blogging 2007. I trust that our values and ideals, which form the basis of what we write will continue to inspire others to greatness.

Goals for the year? I've got some and will share soon. In the meantime, I just want to devote sometime to articles of spiritual significance.... a post to encourage you to continually reign in life. I also came across a web page that floats a ministry of a dear brother. A quick look through suggests it intends to be rich in content and impactful in messages. Check it out here on Christ Life Line.

Enjoy 2007!

Rock of Ages

The Second poem is one written in the eighteenth century by a certain Augustus Topaldy, in his great hymn, Rock of Ages:

Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfil thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to thy cross I cling;
Naked, come to thee for dress,
Helpless, look to thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Saviour, or I die!

God has through his cross, paved the way for you to come to him: uncondemned and forgiven. A native of Texas born in 1934, Chuck is the Chancellor of Dallas Theological Seminary and Senior Pastor of Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, Texas.

His ministry teachings include "Insight for living" aired on American radio as well as "Insight for today", a daily devotional. One of the best books written by Pastor Swindoll is the one titled "The Grace Awakening" where he taught about the pricinples of Grace, our liberation from the law and challenged believers to "square up against legalism".

A gift to the church today, Chuck's books and ministry is one I recommend to any christian, aspiring to grow in the grace of our lord Jesus.

Relationships: Pros and Cons

Just in case you're hoping to find a list of merits and demerits of relationships, then think again. My post today isn't going to attempt to reel off a host of such. However I will discuss a pertinent matter that got me stired up this morning.

Getting off work last night, I had to dash off to meet up with a dear friend and sister, as she needed some help with her computing software (let's call her G). G is a wonderful person and one whom I think is fast developing a great attitude to ministry. As I spent time in conversation with her, I knew this woman will someday be used of God in great ways. I've got a picture of her on my wall (among others) and as I made to get ready for work, I had to pause and think again what impact the relationship she's in at the moment will have on her.

G's passion, commitment and drive for the work of God has challenged and encouraged me. Though she's just 2 years born-again, it is evident that given the necessary mentoring and teaching, her faith could explode for the glory of God. However I am a bit concerned. I don't know if I'm just in my state of paranoia again, thinking things that aren't there. Whatever the case is, I am hoping (and praying) that G's relationship with (let's call him, W) will be a stirring up even unto greater works.

Why am I thinking this way, you ask? It's because I know W, and have interacted with him for months now, even before he got G's heart. In my honest opinion, W isn't as mature in Christ as G is. There have been a few occasions when we've been having meetings/fellowships with G in attendance and W kinda gets agitated that the meeting is too long (he's not in the same group/cell with G that I coordinate) or wonders why we should even be having such at that time because he'd like to go away with G (he wasn't even seeing her yet!).

Don't get me wrong, I do not have any biased issues with G and W. If they're persuaded in their hearts to have a relationship based on God's principles, that's fine. However I have seen men and women who used to be on fire for God, get involved with a spouse or mate, or build frienships that over time "kills" off the passion for ministry because these associations were with persons who don't share the same drive and zeal.

I may just be presumptous, I hope I am really. But I suppose the holy writ teaches us that our associations should be unto "stirring one another, and so much more as we see the day (of our lord's coming) approaching" The previous verse in Heb 10:24,25 admonishes that we should "consider (observe fully) one another to provoke unto love and to good works (by implication, an act or deed; typically christian work as opposed to just any other kind).

This Hurts

I know this is a little digression from the subject matter that is the essence of my blog. However I can't help posting this. My passions for true governance seems to engulf me daily and I am righteously angry at the latest of the shambles that my beloved country came up with during the weekend. I read Funmi's blog and had to make comments, added below.

It's a shame Funmi...a travesty that Nigeria has become a puppet playground for men who toy around with bloated egos and despicable characters. I must admit that I didn't see this coming. Reading and following after trends from the UK, I had hoped that all the news about Yar'adua were mere assumptions. And to think he's been paired with a certain Jonathan Goodluck????

Like a friend of mine said in his IM to me this morning; mumu + mumu = Obj 3rd term. Something is wrong with our minds, nay our values and priorities. What is this love for power, position and money? Even at almost 80, why is this old man still meddling around with 9ja like the nation is some sort of extended family of his, running as he dares fit?

To even zone the presidency to the north is the biggest of all shames. I mean, what the heck does zoning a leadership/office/government position to a particular geographic spectre mean? What happened to democratic processes of allowing the people to vote for the man they choose, rather than the next best idiot "zoned" to them? This in my opinion, is one of the tragedies that is called Nigeria.

Until we stop paying undue attention to ethnic diversities and focus on values, ideals, integrity, competence etc, I wonder where we're headed next. So suppose we need a minister of education or a minsiter of energy and such office has been "zoned" to the south, do we then find the next best idiot among the lot of under-qualified men and women to fill these positions rather than consider the man who though from the East, will adequately fill the role?

This is pathetic.

Nigeria: A Nation on the Brink of Liberation?

"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people" Prov 14:34

The past few months has been full of intrigues in the Nigerian political climate. From the poor voters' registration exercise to the many spate of killings and bomb treats. Impeachment of public officers unconstitutionally, the usurping of the judiciary by Government ministers. Party dogging and withdrawals, electioneering and screenings, the Nigerian polity has indeed made for keen observation.

Silently I have prayed God for a righteous leader, maybe not someone entirely born-again in character and spirit (for that's what righteousness is; and how I wish so for such), but at least a man who values the people he serves, the rule of law and the principles of sound governance.

Oh how my beloved country will benefit from such a man who fears God. One who isn't a religious fascade, praying to the east or kneeling with head bowed; only to rise up and demonstrate an utter disregard for humanity. It is obvious that righteousness indeed exalts a nation. The greatest countries today are built upon the precepts of the holy writ. Her leaders are men and women who recognise a higher authority and serve "not as unto men, but unto God".

I weep! Indeed I wept today when I woke up to the news that party elections are being rigged, uncredible aspirants who lost the people's vote to contest and thus disqualified have suddenly been "re-qualified" in the interests of the party. I wept when again, I read that certain public office holders are installing their prefered successors in positions where they can influence victory for such so that, as far as Nigerian parlance goes, the incumbent can still lay hold on the office, albeit indirectly.

It's a shame! I can almost swear that these same men and women are those who in the days of the military junta cursed and called the names of deity, accusing the khaki men of looting our land and disregarding the rule of law. These same men professed in those gloomy days that given the chance, they will banish the ills that threatened the survival of our nation. I think they even swore. We don't need a long lecture to know the outcome of their almost 8 years rule, do we?

Nigeria! Are we on the brink of Liberation? Or will 2007 be a continuation of all that's bad for Nigeria?

Ministry & Government II

I have only pastored the people of God for a few years, and even then it was a growing small church and we didn't have all the money and influencial men and women. We were students, celebrating our love for God weekly and bearing each other's burdens. Therefore I cannot claim to have the experience of dealing with a large congregation, nor men and women of high calibre. I do however have enough knowledge and daily walk and wisdom of the Lord to recognise proper standards.

In my view, ministry and leadership go hand in hand. Of course one does not have to be interested in governance as a christian, indeed you may be better off following after your passions for God and spiritual things alone. However you'll agree with me that in your little cubicles, the onus lie on you to be socially responsible. Christianity should not be practiced inside our homes or within the walls of the church alone. The best example of true christian walk abound in your daily interactions and how relevant the faith is to your society.

Daily I have watched christians who show an utter apathy at the ills of their society. Their argument is that why bother; afterall we're strangers and pilgrims on the earth? I find this disturbing indeed. I found the headline news about two different high flying churches who have purposed to spend millions of dollars to build large churches with state of the art and expensive technologies worrisome. Why invest so much in monuments that will fade away and eventually get destroyed when half the money can be used to improve the lot of the membership they're supposed to feed?

Gospel injunction to sheperds is to "feed the flock of the lord". Does this only connote teaching them God's word? While much of God's direction definitely means so, I guess we can extend it a little to also mean "care for their welfare, ensure they're clothed, housed, and are socially secure". God expects us as ministers, whether in direct governance or leading our flock, to be socially relevant in their lives. Using our positions to influence what happens to them when they walk outside the church.

Of what good will a big church auditorium, glass walls, plasma screens, state of the art sound systems, wireless hotspots, leather cushions for seats etc do to individual lives? Do these things indeed enhance spiritual knowledge? Do they add up to how much we can be effective in ensuring that the flock are well taught God's word and are growing in his grace? I haven't asked ministers to consider going into governance. This will of course be very wrong and unbiblical - "Let each man be persuaded in his heart".

However I am asking ministers and christians to pause and think again, aren't we supposed to be socially responsible to our society? Should we just be content with getting by life, as long as we're assured of heaven's splendour?

Ministry & Government

I was reading Funmi Iyanda's blog when the thought stirred my mind with some poignant effect. I have often admired her intelligence and ability to distinguish herself from the easily corrupt sychophants in agbada and kaftan that we have in my beloved country Nigeria. A hidden passion of mine began to stir itself and I began to consider how much I'll love to go back home and take my place among the elite men and women who will inadvertently bring justice, fairness and the rule of law to the world's most populous black nation.

As I considered this again, the struggle raged in my inner being. How would I nurture two passions and realise the fruits when each one demands diligence, focused attention and unbridled participation? In case you don't know what I am talking about, the title helps. I am passionate about God and his work, and while I do not presently sense a calling of God to what is called full-time ministry, I do know (and will follow after) that my fulfillment will someday come when I take my place in some ministry endeavour. Not that I ain't doing that at the moment, but time is going to come when teaching and pastoring on a regular basis will be happily embraced. Or perhaps functioning in the ministry of helps, atttending to the sheep of the Lord. I am convinced about my passion for ministry, and this in much the same way as I am of governance.

Growing up in Nigeria and witnessing the many ills of our society has long etched in my heart a desire to see changes. I am sick of the appalling state of our society, the utter disregard for sound values and the decay in our socio-economy. Being well educated and exposed to right values and ideals of life, I cannot sit with folded arms and watch. Indeed I do not belong to the class of men who watch things happen, or wonder what has happened. I will much rather make things happen. The Likes of Funmi, Prof Pat and the many silent (for now) minds in Nigeria and the diaspora thus attract me. These are the kind of men I'd much rather associate with. People who have sound values and are students of justice and equity.

However I have often wondered how fitting these two varying passions will combine themselves. I have read varying biased thoughts and vendetta poured by the church on a certain Rev Chris Okotie, who though a minister of the gospel seems to be interested in the highest office of the land. Many ascribe that he has lost his vision and direction to follow after ministry. Whatever the case is, I'm not sure Rev Okotie is entirely wrong in declaring an interest in Governance. I agree that the platform and way he's been going about it aren't exactly "ministry-like" and the ideals he seems to hold for Governance somehow contradicts that of true gospel.

Does this however mean that being interested in leadership as a socially responsible christian is wrong? Does such ambition invalidate one's calling by God? I suppose ministry and the gospel should be socially relevant to the people of any community. While we feed the spirits and souls of men with God's message of hope and peace, we also ought to consider how crucial our participation in Governance might help to alieviate many of society's ills. Rather than take tax-payers money and erect monuments of splendour that gulp large sums of money in various cities of the world, perhaps we can consider diverting such funds into community development, feeding the poor, helping the homeless, creating opportunities for people to obtain jobs, empowering men to create their own wealth.

........... to be continued ......

Failing Foward

Ironically this Title is the same as that of a book by one of my treasured authors "John Maxwell" (another one of my collection of literature). While the message and ideas are embraced, I do not intend to write a book review here nor adapt his message. The past few months has indeed been daunting for me, and a test of my faith as well as strong resolve in the Lord. I have held on firmly to the principles for which my life is based and growing stronger in God's Grace. It is in light of this that I share my thoughts on today's blog:

It is easy to think of yourself as the person you have been. Yet it is far more powerful to see yourself as the person you can become. The mistakes and disappointments of the past may seem to be a major presence in your life or threaten to shape your future. At this very moment however, you can choose to leave them completely behind. From this point on, your life is up to you. In each and every moment that is to come, you are free to choose your thoughts, your feelings, your actions and your attitude.

Consider your possibilities. Think about what could happen if the limitations you thought existed were not really there at all. Reach deep within yourself and connect your thoughts to the things that truly matter. Then imagine expressing those treasured values with the way you live each moment. The things you can accomplish are yet unexplored, even still no eyes yet seen nor ears heard or even hearts conceived. You bask as a true praise of a most talked of personality - EMMANUEL!

Beginning now, you can live with the richness and profound purpose that you know is right for you. From this point on, your life is yours to choose.................Really it is!

Making Your Life Count

I have always been fascinated by stories of men and women who gave their all for the good, and sometimes evil of the rest of humanity. From Adolf Hitler, Musolini, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Martin Luther King Jr to mention but a few, these men lived for the passions of making their lives count in some way, either good or bad. During the 2nd World war precisely on the 10th of May 1940, Kind George VI summoned Sir Winston Churchill to lead his beloved Birtain against the enemy that threatened Europe.

Churchill confidently accepted the challenge. He later recounted that he felt he was walking with destiny, and that all his past life had been but a preparation for that hour and that trail. Jesus too, had a magnificent obsession. He found himself consumed by a compelling sense of divine providence, and each day of his life drew him closer to a fulfillment of his earthly mission: that of surrending himself for humanity's sake at Calvary's cross.

Like these men, we too have a mission on earth. As I pondered on these thoughts, a book written by the late Kenneth E. Hagin titled "Plans, Purposes and Pursuits" came to my mind. I had read this piece of literature some eight years ago and the message continually linger in my mind. I have a mission, a purpose and a plan to pursue.

"For you are his workmanship (handiwork) created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God has beforehand ordained that we should walk in them" Eph 2:10

Paul, Peter and the rest of the apostles made their lives count. Other men of God today are making their lives count. They understand what it means to be God's handiwork, and have dedicated their lives to seeing that the purposes for which they've been created and called, are fulfilled. The onus thus lie with many of us; are we making our lives count? Are we following God's plan for our lives or ours?

Poetry for His Mercy

I am addicted to Poetry! At least it's one endeavour of humanity that reveals a bit about how intelligent the mind can be stretched when we allow our God-given abilities to be put to work. Since discovering that I have the gift, I have not seized to follow after greater minds and works of other reknowned poets. Sometimes I wonder what am doing pursuing a career in the sciences when it's obvious that my natural inclinations tend towards arts, literature and nature. I guess that's some food for my thoughts.

Lately I have been reading after some poets, especially those whose work covey the depths of the meaning of Christianity. They have been a blessing to my life, teaching me how to carve words into meaningful use, and reminding me of the darkness our Lord went through to save humanity as well as the dawn of his glorious resurrection and ascention to proclaim victory over death, sin and the law to bridge the gap that existed as a result of the fall at Eden, between God and man.

The Twelfth-century monk, Bernard of Clairvaux paints a vivid picture of redemption in poetry. I like this and thought to share. Read on...

What thou, my Lord has suffered
Was all for sinners' gain;
Mine, mine was the transgression
But thine the deadly pain.
Lo, here I fall, my saviour!
'Tis I deserve thy place;
Look on me with thy favor,
Vouchsafe to me thy grace.

What language shall I borrow
To thank Thee, dearest friend,
For thus Thy dying sorrow,
Thy pity without end?
O make me Thine forever;
And should I fainting be,
Lord, let me never, never
Outlive my love to Thee.

I haven't blogged in a while, and this is partially due to my increasingly buzy routine as well as my laziness (admittedly) to ignore my body's call for a good rest and scribble a few lines here. I trust it'll get better really, as I am aware of the tremendous work that needs to be done as an effective communicator of God's word.

It seems though, that my "little fitness corner" has become some sort of alter for me. Daily I have looked forward to getting up from bed and proceeding to my steppers where I do some 500 strokes while simulteneously praying in tongues. I have become so used to it, that I do not even realize when time's far spent and rush to the shower before heading out for the day.

Indeed I have gained the best of two useful exercises; one of building myself in the faith in communication with, and worshipping of God and the other of exercising my physical body. Afterall "bodily exercise profits little, but Godliness is profittable unto all things..." 1 Tim 4:8. This routine starts my day, and I dare say it sets my body up for the day's stress and my spirit for its challenges.

There's some story I need to share here, and I haven't forgotten to continue my advise on "feeding your mind". However permit me to sign off now with a few words etched on my mind this morning as I prayed; " Whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world....." 1 John 5:4. Continue to lead your lives as those in a victorious march. The world (and all it brings) are subject to you.

Rejoice!

Stepping into Worship

Right on the wall of my little fitness corner (in my apartment) hangs an inscription taken from Jesus' conversation with the Samaritan woman by Jacob's well in the city of Sychar. It's one of the most classic statements uttered by Jesus. Rich in meaning, it depicts the mystery of his coming, dying, rising from the dead and living again today for you and I.

"But the Hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the father in spirit and in truth: for the father seeks such to worship him. God (is) a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship (him) in spirit and in truth" John 4: 23, 24 (italics not in the originals).

As I read these words again this morning, I began to ponder (as I oft do) on the meanings embedded in the words. Could it be that Jesus was hinting that true worship had not existed before then? Could he be saying that worship has certain pre-requisites for the worshipper? Could these be the clapping of hands, or the raising of arms? Could it be tied to the songs or prayers, the avenue or the atmosphere? Indeed as I mused, I knew it isn't any of these.

Earlier in the dialogue, the samaritan woman had bragged about their venue for worship. And Jesus characteristically informed her that from thenceforth, worship will no longer be identified by such physical pointers. Jewish worship was based on its venue (the temple in Jerusalem or on the mount), as well as the sacrifices and rituals performed (can be likened to the singing or type of singing or countenance of the 'worshipper' as we have today). In contrast rather, Jesus was making a bold statement.

This is the message: True worship is characterized by a Spiritual relationship with God, obtained at the New Birth by anyone and everyone who accepts Jesus as Lord and Saviour (being born again) and such worship is in view of Jesus, who is revealed as Truth. That is, a celebration of his redemptive work on calvary's cross in acknowledgement of the manifold blessings he has brought by this singular act.

No wonder True worship had not existed at the time of the chat. Afterall Jesus had not yet taken up the cross! Is it any wonder that even in this dialogue, Jesus was already talking about one of the many benefits of his coming? Now as Christians, we can truly worship God and live in ecstasy of his earthly work. No wonder he said " we would neither at a mountain or in Jerusalem" worship the father. For indeed, our worship can be exhibited anywhere, any place. It's the status quo of our lives. See how Paul defined it...

"For we are the circumcision (those in the Grace-covenant relationship with God), which worship God in the spirit (the relationship is spiritual), and rejoice in Christ Jesus (make our boast in him, glory in his work), and have no confidence in the flesh (do not base our assurance or beliefs in externals or physical showmanship)" Phil 3:3 (italics mine)

The Dan Brown Controversy

I have recently been swamped with emails, and have been privileged to listen in on conversations that bother on whether the allegations posited by Dan Brown in his recent book, "The DaVinci Code" are any threat to Christianity and Christ. Many of the opinions have castigated the author and his piece as a direct attack on Christian beliefs, and another attempt by the devil to subvert the truth. What more, the subsequent movie block buster has generated a lot of debate about whether people should be encouraged to watch it or not!

I laugh at such remarks and uninformed views. For me, the issue here is not about whether people see the movie or read the book. As a true christian who understands the Gospel and Biblical doctrine, I laugh at man's folly and attempt to ridicule the truth, forgetting that "You can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth".

Dan Brown's assertion isn't anything new to Christiandom. Infact when Jesus was alive, he was accused of blasphemy, dining with sinners, and inciting his followers against Jewish authority. After his death, the Gnostics came up with another version of lies, allegating that Jesus indeed did not rise again from the dead. Cerinthus also posited that the hypostatic union was a falacy, and that Jesus wasn't a God-Man. The validity of the virgin birth was also questioned. In the face of all these however, the Truth remains; Jesus is and indeed will always be True God, and One who holds preeminence. Our God knew that falacies as these will arise, and such nonsense as the Dan Brown claim about Jesus' marriage to Mary Magdalene, and a Holy Child is just another of many. In fact, the Bible warns us ahead thus;

"Now the spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times (end times as we are now) some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron," 1 Tim 4:1,2 (emphasis mine)

The Point is this: Contrary to what is the general apprehension in the Christian community that such movies like this will draw people away from the truth, I beg to differ that indeed it only serves to strengthen True Christian resolve to stand for redemption, or as Jude put it, " to contend earnestly for the faith that was once delivered to the saints". The quoted scripture in 1Tim 4:1,2 couldn't be any more apt. I checked the original Greek rendition of the phrase "speaking lies in hypocrisy" and discovered that it actually means in Greek literal sense, "promulgating erroneous christian doctrine, to achieve dissimulation".

So Let Dan Brown and his cohorts continue, the Church isn't fazed.....not at all! Infact he is a mere piece in (permit me to use the word) "assisting" to show that indeed "You can do nothing against the Truth, but for the Truth". True Believers will arise and be undeceived, for they know the Truth. Unbelievers will be steered to wonder what exactly is the Truth, and may stumble at it and believe it. Panic not my friends, Jesus still Rules in the affairs of men.

The Eye of God

Take a look at this wonderful work of nature, and you’ll agree with me that truly “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork” Ps 19:1.

This picture has been called the Eye of God.

Isn’t it so comforting to know that the eyes of the Lord are ever upon them that are his? Well I don’t know about you, but for me the implication is that I can go to sleep without hassles.

“Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy” Ps 33:18

Have you ever noticed how mothers have their eyes on their kids? More so God, for every maternal instinct emanates from Him. He has His eyes ever on you. So whenever you feel all alone, remember, His eyes are always upon you, but the best part of it is that he terbanacles in you, if you’re born again. “Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you”. John 14:25

Never forget that His eyes are ever on you, to see you through all you are going through, and all you’ll ever go through in Life.

The Haven

I wrote something down a while back, and I thot it will be great for me to share it.

My friend had come to see me, and it was time for her to go, so I saw her off to the junction where she could get a cab. Prior to leaving the house, the weather had turned very cloudy, so I took an umbrella with me, a very big umbrella, the family type. We didn’t have to wait for long before she got a cab, so I said bye to her. As I started back home, it began to rain. Little drops at first, them later, heavily. By this time, I was looking for the nearest shed available. I saw one where a lot of people were gathered, so I went to join them and stayed there for sometime.

The funny thing was that I had forgotten completely that I had an umbrella with me, or maybe it was the force of the rain that made me not to remember. After a while, I became conscious that I was holding an umbrella, so I decided to step into the rain, with it. Interestingly, when I did this, I discovered that I was well protected. True I got some rain splashes on my feet, but I was able to start back home with almost every other part of my body dry.

This scenario made me start thinking as I walked back home how similar the situation is with so many believers. It may be a weak comparison, but it just struck me as apt. When the storm of life darts at us, we tend to run to the same things the unbelievers run to, or rather have the same attitude, forgetting all the while that we have a Father who is more than big enough, who is mindful of us. This could be either because the storm is so great, or we just aren’t conscious of Him.

Whatever the case, it isn’t enough excuse for us to loose sight of Him in our lives cos’ before we were formed, he knew us, and His thoughts towards us are thoughts of peace to give to us a future and a hope. It’s also true that even while trusting in him, we will still have our faith tested, similar to the rain splash I got on my feet while covered with the umbrella. However Count it all joy, you aren’t alone. So next time you are facing a storm, remember; He is right there with you, better still He’s in you. Jesus is all the cover you need!

Take a fresh look at Psalms 23, and you'll be amazed how blessed you are to be called God's own.

The Attack on Marriage

I wonder if we (Christians) can discern the trends of our day as pertaining to Marriage. I ask this because if we observe correctly and can accurately interprete the worldly and I dare say satanic discussions surrounding the Godly Institution called Marriage, then perhaps we will understand what I am talking about.

It's no longer news that same sex marriages are being legalised and welcomed in our society. As if this isn't shuddering enough, what is more appalling is the plan to legalise multiple partner marriages and multiple gender marriages. Of course there exists today, sexual fetishes where it is commonplace to share partners, swinging and three, four or more partners in bed. Soon clamour for legalization of these in marriage will start.

This is a direct attack on God's institution. Marriage is a sacred gift given to us by God as it depicts the relationship he shares with us in Christ. The Institution has been typologically used to describe God and his Church (body).

The idea is this: since Marriage is Biblically regarded as the Union of Man and woman in matrimony, then where a man and another man, a woman and another woman can legally unite, and where a man can unite with two or more women and vice versa, or a woman in unision with another man and another woman etc (endless permutations isn't it?), then soon Marriage will sieze to exist as a Holy entity.

If God has defined Marriage as the Union of Man and Woman, and if in our day any other combination can be called Marriage, then soon everything can be called Marriage. Then the question begs to be asked: What indeed will marriage be? I'll spare you the thoughts; NOTHING!

Here's the world's plan (need I say devil?). If anything can be called Marriage, then nothing can hold on to a sole claim as marriage. Then the institution will seize to be sacred, God forbid! Like Rod Parsley titles in his acclaimed book "Silent No More", we as Christians need to awake to the issues of our day.

Please let me have your views.

Religion or Relationship

One of my Favourite Gospel artists is the Group 'Cross Movement'. Recently I was listening to one of their albums and the track " Spare Rituals" got me reflecting. The Chorus says "without Christ you ain't spiritual, what it is' a bunch of spare rituals".

These words struck a familiar chord in my soul. I recall a few days ago I was discussing with a dear friend about my observation of comtemporary Christian sermons and issues these days. It seems that much of our pre-occupation and teaching have simply dealt with encouraging men and women to 'just come to church, get involved with activities, the promise of wealth-a-plenty, and of course the incessant call to stop sinning'.

Of course I am a firm believer in church work, prosperity and righteous living. However I shudder at the thought that most professing Christians today are merely Church goers, moral living people who have been deceived to think that once you sign up to Church and 'godly' living, heaven is yours!

Christianity isn't mere religious rites! It is not a religion, rather it's a call to relationship with Christ and God. A union with him, fellowship and participation with him as well as access to his throne. Like a man and woman unite in ideals, values, beliefs and share all things in common (in marriage), so is the call to Christianity. It is primarily a fusion of two wills into one: Yours and Christs.

Thence follow actions that depict the newness of your purpose as permitted in your relationship with Christ. No longer are you driven to and fro by religious obligations but rather by a firm resolution to live for the one you are united with. It's like the Chicken and the Egg, which comes first?

Do not live a life having a form of godliness but denying its ability. That isn't Christianity, it's some other religion not even close to Christs'. Of course there isn't a promise of heaven therein. Cross Movement is right: without Christ it really is a bunch of rituals, ceremonies, and externals.

What do you feed your mind?

The question begs to be asked; how do you deal with your mind? What do you feed him? The mind represents the centrepiece of our being, the very location of all our thoughts. It is where our actions are shaped and decisions made. Solomon knew the importance of this he exhorted in his beautiful and poetic warnings: "Keep your heart (mind) with all diligence for out of it are the issues of life" Prov 4:23

Hear Paul's words:

"I beseech you......that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God.......and be not conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind....." (Rom 12:1,2).

Man is a triune being. His Spirit is the very essence of him, this is where his connection or disconnection from God occurs. The Spirit is the being of man created in God's image, the only part of man that will return to his creator. The body is the shelter of man. Here is our physical outlook and appeal to the rest of creation, its composition has been described by scientists as mamalian, and further Homosapien. Then comes the location of man's intellect, his reasoning, his thoughts and factory of all his actions and consciences- the Mind.

While the Spirit has been dealt with in the new birth (regenerated and infused with God's spirit), the body and mind hasn't been changed! The body will of course be replaced at Christ's coming (what scripture calls the unveiling of immortality). The platform has of course been made available at Golgotha, and thanks to the resurrection, we can look forward to the day when we will "put off" this old body for a new one.

However the changing or renewing of our mind has been left to us. As long as we live in this world, we will be exposed to "worldly" ideas, images, thoughts and sounds. Any wonder Paul exhorts as above? We must be equiped to handle such pressures keeping our focus on Christ and our mind in subjection to his will.

.....to be continued.....

The Celebrity Craze

Living in the UK has introduced me to another perspective of human cravings. This is the lust for what is called "Celebrity Status". It's a constant barrage of fleshly lust aimed at glorifying persons who in the eye of society are better than others. We are constantly harrassed by images of these so-called gods and are drawn to their lifestyles, albeit good or bad.

The Media do a perfect job at it and we are inadvertently told that if we are to matter at all in this life, we ought to be Celebrities! Therefore in an attempt to follow after this craze, we normally do things that celebrities do. We eat their food, dine at their favourite restaurants, wear same hair and makeup, shoes and dresses. They have become the icon and standard for living and we aim to "look" like them.

Have you seen girls literally faint and scream their voices away at the sight of Michael Jackson? Ever watched the TV show "Makeover" where folks go through all sorts of surgical procedures to physically resemble their Celebrity icon (J-Lo, Britney, Angelina Jolie etc etc)? Did you see the just concluded "Celebrity Big Brother" on TV? Ever seen shops literally sell all their stocks of evening gowns overnight just 'cos Madonna wore the same gown to the Oscars?

I thank God I have found my identity in his word. Thank God he has defined us above all the nonsense of this world. Thank God we aren't conformed to mortal status, celebrated today, irrelevant tommorrow. The God of life calls us Royal, Holy, Chosen, Guiltless, Redeemed, Forgiven, Sons, Priests, Gracious, Favoured to mention but a few.

"But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people...." 1 Peter 2:9

This is true identity, real image to celebrate. Any celebrity out there?

Time Well Spent

What do you consider as time well spent? Everyday of our lives we go through varying proportions of challenges, tasks and responsibilities that demand the best (or sometimes the worst) from us. Our responses often times are a definition of our personalities, our ideals and our values.....or maybe not. It may also be as a result of inner pressures to please, a desire for false recognition or merely an opportunity to be adventurous.

However your day is spent, we all (I hope) retire to consider the high points of the day and reflect on its gains and losses. Naturally, we value some time of the day better than others and would be happy to tell anyone what we consider as our time well spent.

Permit me to ask once again? What do you value as time well spent everyday?

Do you spend some of your exhaustive day talking and relating in fellowship with God? Do you pause through the barrage of activities to focus on the inner man and your walk with Jesus? Do you value the help of the Holy Spirit all through the day and give him right of place? Or would you normally skip through the day without pausing nor praying, listening nor meditating (on his word and will)?

"........men always ought to pray, and not to faint" Luke 18:1

There are numerous verses of the Holy writ where Christians are encouraged to take off time to commune with God. The idea isn't merely locked up into praying, as in supplicating (though much of this is implied). It also follows the thought that we should spend our days in constant communication with God and his word.

The benefits are tremendous! One of which is a constant participation in, and awareness of your life as seen by the eye of God. If I could live each day walking with God and getting tips on how to go about each minute or hour without the incessant slip-ups and failings, wouldn't that be time well spent?

I guess I don't have to wish for it; it's available! You and I can avail ourselves of the immense opportunities.

Resolutions

Another year has rolled in and it's almost 1month down, 11 to go! By the way, Happy New Year y'all. This is my first blog for 2006, phew! I apologize to readers who have wondered when "fresh manna" will be released and promise an inflow of blogs to make up.

Every New year begins with the usual hoopla of Resolutions. From losing weight to quitting smoking....from decisions of commitment (to different things) to planning to achieve plenty. Every sane person commits himself to goals and aspirations for the 12months ahead. Making Resolutions are not in any way bad, nor unspiritual.

It's about setting sight on goals that you want to achieve with God's help and working your way to actualize them. And if "you commit your ways unto the Lord, he shall establish your paths". So let's go into the year, making God our fuel for life, his spirit our help and guide and his work our focus.

Set goals that borders around your ministry, your career, your family, your habits, your relationships and lots more. Write them down and commit to work at it. Pray God for enablement to follow through and not back off, trusting that his faithfulness avails all year round. Be Resolute about issues that concern you, but remember that it'll only work out when you first lay them down at the Lord's alter.

Check them against his fire of approval (yes, it's best if your desires are his' for you). Then get into the year ready to explode, the greater one by your side. All the best for 2006.

Christmas Once Again

"Jingle bells, Jingle bells, Jingle all the way",............"Holy Night when stars are bright and shining....", "Santa claus is in town....coming around with gifts and love". Songs, words, elegy, chants of the Christmas season pervades the air. And why not? This is the period of time when the whole world irrespective of race, culture, religion or creed agree as one to celebrate what the Roman calendar (which we have adopted) calls the yuletide.

Gifts are exchanged, smiles are shared and the miserly shock recipients by giving! It's the Joy of the season many say, and we do take time to express sincere love to the needy. One statement says that in this time, we need to embrace the season's spirit by "giving up what we want for others who need it".

Truly this idea is the reason for the season. Once upon a time, God gave up what he might want, for us who needed it. He gave himself as a precious gift to the world, thus sparking a spirit of free giving in sincerity and love. However, behind the spirit of the giving is the reason for the giving......God gave up himself so we can appreciate his gift, accept his gift and make the best of it.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish but have eternal life" (John 3:16)

Imagine if during this yuletide, you gave up your most expensive valuable to a needy person, only to discover that that person didn't show gratitude, didn't appreciate it and didn't value it. What more, this person scorned you and the gift and made its usefulness of no effect in his life. How would you feel? Lets say you gave up your expensive 2006 porsche convertible and found out the recipient is using the gift as a commodity vehicle, maybe to transport perishable items.

Truly we ought to think about God's gift to humanity in this season and respond more appropriately. An acceptance of this gift ushers us into eternal life! What better promise of hope, life and light now and beyond now. This is the true masterpiece! The better gift! Christmas is here again, we ought to rejoice! But while we eat the steaks, pudding, chocolates, and drink the wine........let's pause for a moment and think, have we accepted the one who sparked off the giving two centuries ago?

His name is Jesus.....and as Santa comes knocking handing out gifts to all, JESUS is knocking as well! HE is however not handing out any perishable gifts, he is handing out HIMSELF........with a promise of a fulfilling life now and forever more. When he knocks (and surely he will yet again), please open the door!

Thank You

The year draws to an end and naturally we'd all take a moment to reflect on the months past. I guess it isn't out of place to spend sometime in this act John Maxwell calls "The Power of Reflective thinking" in his best selling book, "Thinking for a change". I have a copy and I say it's one of the best pieces I read this year.

However this is not a book review. I want to use this page to appreciate the people who have meant a lot to my life thus far. To the readers of this page, my family, my friends, my fiancee, my critics, and loved ones.............I say a Big thank you for making 2005 a year well spent! Your names and memories are etched in my heart always. To my pastor and fellow contributor, many thanks...

To the Father of Spirits for whom my life is lived, am grateful for the blessings abundant. Your Love, your life, your light and your Grace has kept me. Thank you Lord Jesus for the gift of Salvation and for living yesterday, today and forever..........that I might live yesterday, today and forever with you in Glory!

Halleluyah to the King of Kings, Glory to the Lord of my life!

I got thinking....

The past week has been filled with Events glad, mad and sad! One of these struck my emotions and made me a little angry as well. I know the international community may have heard about the recent spate of air disasters in Nigeria and may be aware of the lacklustre attitude of government and authorities to public safety in that rich African country. What is more alarming is the response by the leaders, to issues of national (and international) concern as this.

But I won't go on about "what i's should be dotted and t's crossed". For me, last week was tragic in that the Christian world lost one of her gems; the indefatigable Bimbo Odukoya as she made her way to one of several ministry responsibilities. Her aircraft never landed and she lost her life amongst several other passengers and threw the nation and the church into mourning.

Pastor Bims as she was fondly called was associate pastor of the Fountain of Life Church, Lagos, SW Nigeria who in her time impacted many people with God's word. A role model, mentor and woman of valor, she will indeed be missed. A wonderful woman, who managed the affairs of the Lord with dignity and reverence. However I rejoice and celebrate her life, and I got thinking.....

Pastor Bims made her life count! As a christian, she worked and carried the father's injuction to herald his name and made it her clarion call till her last breathe. I got thinking.......how much of this have I done in my life? I got thinking.....how much of her life have we who mourn her emulated? She will be buried this week, and many mourners will be there I presume. An ode will be read and all will celebrate a life well spent in Christ.

But will we think, how much of our lives have we made to count so far? How much will count when we go home? Pastor Bims is asleep, and we who are awake should get thinking........and oh! need I say ACTING?

If God were to count his blessings.....

I saw this title piece from another blog I thought you might like to read. It was simple yet captivating and soul searching. It was a picture of a weak and sickly woman who clutched onto her Bible (seemingly to represent God's word). Right behind her were three shadows each pointing in different directions, each away from the Bible. Reading that article I discovered the true meaning of the cover picture.

I remember adapting this concept to use as a dance drama when I was in the University. The plot was simple with similar characters. Only this time, we put the shadows into action depicting each one as pointing the woman to the Grave, Hospital or Shrine (or some other demi-god). I believe this image brings home a war in our minds everytime we fall ill or are afflicted with some form of disease or ailment.

Do we take solace in God's promise of healing and health? When an affliction wages with your body, what's your first point of call for help? God is still in the business of healing us, he's been doing it from creation, he is still doing it!

"Surely he has borne our sicknesses and carried our pains........And by his stripes we are healed" (Is 53:4,5).

Next time you feel a pain or have a sickness, remember God's word that he healed you at Calvary(1 Peter 2:24). Like the woman in the cover story, hold onto God's word. Ignore the call for anywhere else!

What Do you Read?

In these days of living on the fast lane no thanks to the boom in Technology and how it has affected our daily living, it's very easy to get caught up and ignore the key things that equip us for daily Victory. Many Christians get through days, weeks and (God Forbid!) months without actually READING their most precious possession, The Bible..

So this answers your question: On the Train, I often Read my Bible. As I pulled it out again from my bag this morning and opened its wonderful pages, I got the usual stirs. I can imagine some minds wondering how a 21st century man like me would delight in reading the Bible when there are loads of "other" books (magazines, journals, newspapers, novels etc etc) to read. I don't mind the stirs, infact I am hoping that my pre-occupation with Reading my Bible would influence some to do likewise, or permit a curious mind to ask me about what fascinates me......and then my chance to bless his life may come!

You see, I can't afford to get caught up in the 21st century that my closest contact with God's word comes only when I am in church or as most have resorted to, listening to the reading of the Bible on Dvds, Cds or magnetic tapes. Nothing replaces spending time and doing some READING of the Bible for yourself...

"Till I come, pay ATTENTION to READING of scriptures, to exhortation, to doctrine" (1 Tim 4:13, emphasis mine).

"Whereby when you READ, you may understand my knowledge in the mystery of God" (Eph 3:4, emphasis mine)

For me, no other means of knowing God's instruction can replace READING it! Listening to a Cd/Dvd rendition while I shower, dress up or drive to work, sermons taught in church, logging onto the Internet to read daily devotionals or watch/listen to my favourite preachers do some enriching, yes.......But the 30mins train ride to work, and 30mins back home in the evening (whew! 1 whole hour) of enjoying the World's greatest Book cannot be traded for any other activity. And I do more reading elsewhere..

It should be the same for you. Do you take time out to READ your Bible? You can start today. Therein lies the wealth you seek, herein hides enrichment for life's successes!

Another Day....

I woke up this morning and sighed! It's another day of work and I hadn't had much sleep as I have been keeping late nights working on projects due next week. Getting on the train to North London where I work, the usual sight greets me. Commuters with crossed legs and fixed gazes at any material to read. Having moved into London, this is one of the few amazing things I have noticed about Londoners.

I like to use the train, as the 30mins ride from home to work gives me time to get myself psychologically ready for the day ahead. I may have picked up a habit as well.....that is the habit of READING on the TRAIN. I love to read, but it seems I look forward to reading on the train these days more than anywhere else. This might be as a result of the fact that almost everyone else on the train is either reading or pretending to read. A few smiles, nods and occasional gestures here and there. That's all you'll get from Londoners who are not very happy to chat with a stranger until you make the first move and if you're lucky, find a "willing to chat" victim.

Londoners are really courteous people and can be as friendly as your average citizen. But unlike Americans, they won't make the first move. And while you are having a conversation, please keep it polite and courteous. Laugh occassionally even when nothing is funny and appear interested in the dialogue even when you'd rather shut up and go on READING......

Thus these days when I am going to travel by train, I usually find a book to read or a mate to accompany me. Else pray hard to find a gentleman or lady willing to chat, and hope that he/she is not boring. Hence comes the obvious question; what do I read? I'll tell you....

Sure we're still on Track?

Isn't it amazing how much emphasy on making money, living large and acquiring so much wealth has pervaded the church these days? Every song or sermon is centered on this issue with different sides wielding their banters.

While I do not belong to the school of thought that says Christians should live an impoverished life, I also do not belong to the group that focuses on acquiring wealth (with all its pleasures, cars, mansions, $ and £ in the wallet etc etc). I believe that Prosperity is a part of our God-given salvation, yes.......But I also believe in one thing, and this is that my pre-occupation should not be centred on issues of insignificance as wealth, cars, clothes, travels and all that we seem to follow after these end days.

Afterall God is sufficient to our every need and doth provide as richly as he is (Phil 4:19, paraphrase mine). Besides he has sent us, in focus on Kingdom issues and to expand his work on earth. When he says we should "occupy till he comes", sorry folks Jesus isn't saying gather as much wealth and the fullness of materiality (as some have interpreted the parable of the talents). He is saying " take charge of the earth (have authority) and expand the Kingdom frontiers" till he comes!

" If ye then be risen with Christ, pursue those things which are above...........set your affections on things above......." Jesus and his apostles must have mentioned this in the Bible several times that we sure know it must be an important virtue.......but, haven't you like me being hurt many times by many people that we find it rather difficult to Love them?

Sure the Lord must understand that expressing Love to these ones is almost impossible. The natural instinct wants to pull away, afterall "once bitten, twice shy". I used to think this way until I saw the mistake I was making with regards to walking in this divine virtue;

"Beloved let us love one another..........for God is Love" (1 John 4:7,8)

".......because the Love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Ghost which was given to us" (Romans 5:5)

"But the Fruit of the Spirit is Love...." (Gal 5:22)

God expects us to Love our neighbour because the Virtue of Love has been given to us! He doesn't expect it to be natural, neither is such a walk to be in response to a good deed or bad one done to us. He simply expects us to allow our reborn spirit filled with this ability to control our actions and walk in his enablement. If we tried it naturally, we'd fail.

However spend a day allowing your Spirit to rule your thoughts and actions, following the Love guide within you (you have it, the Holy Spirit lavished it in us!) and you'll be amazed how really easy it is to actually Love your neigbour. Focus not on your hurts. Easy? Yes, if you focus rather on God's Love within you.

The First words.........

I remember one Thursday evening in 1997. It was like any other evening and the only thing a young undergraduate student would want to do is either go to the library or hang out with some friends. Alas that evening was different for me. I decided to honour an invitation to a church gathering where I heard the words that changed my life forever!

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a new creation" (Gal 6:15).

From the words of the preacher and as I have come to learn over the years, Paul is teaching us that the cross of Jesus and our acceptance to God is not by virtue of our lineage, heritage or background. The Jews in those days were proud and bragged about their relationship with God that was founded on the covenant relationship God established with them via Moses. The symbol of this agreement was that Jews were to be circumcised "to show" that indeed they were the chosen ones that God had delivered at the hands of Egypt and had established a relationship with them based on the Law of Moses.

Paul however teaches that now that Jesus Christ has come and died for us with the effects of his work (coming, dying, ressurecting and living today for us), what counts is "THE NEW CREATURE". If you are born again, you are a New Creature (2 corin 5:17) and this is the only symbol of acceptance before God. This status is the yardstick for measuring our relationship with God.

Isn't it reassuring that it doesn't matter what your background is, neither does it count what your past is? As long as you are in Christ and have identified with his cross, then you are in relationship with him. The Father of Glory and maker of the worlds does not count your heritage or past against you, he only sees you in light of your "New Creature" status. And if you are one, then you are accepted.

Any wonder Paul would say in the preceeding verse that he would rather boast in the cross? These words changed my life as I knew that all I needed was to accept the work of Calvary and not look back at my past or any other thing I counted against myself.
